A trans man, short for transgender man, is a man who was assigned female at birth but has a male gender identity. This means that their gender identity does not align with the gender they were thought to be when they were born. Many trans men choose to undergo surgical or hormonal transition, or both, to alter their appearance in a way that aligns with their gender identity or alleviates gender dysphoria. Although most trans men identify as heterosexual, like cisgender men, they can have any sexual orientation or sexual identity, and some trans men might consider conventional sexual orientation labels inadequate or inapplicable to them, in which case they may elect to use labels like queer. It is important to treat a trans man with respect and refer to them according to their gender identity, not their sex at birth.
