A triple double is a term used in basketball to describe a players performance in a game where they achieve double-digit stats (at least 10) in three different categories out of the five major statistical categories: points, rebounds, assists, steals, and blocks. The most common triple double is achieved through points, rebounds, and assists. However, triple doubles can also be accumulated by notching 10 or more steals or blocks as well, but these categories are notably harder to rack up numbers in. A triple double is considered a significant achievement in basketball, as it requires a player to have a well-rounded game and contribute to winning.
Other terms related to triple doubles include:
- Double-Double: When a player achieves at least 10 in two statistical categories.
- Quadruple-Double: When a player achieves at least 10 in four statistical categories.
Triple doubles used to be a rare sight in the NBA, but they are becoming more common now. The most triple doubles in the 2022-23 NBA season were achieved by Nikola Jokic, who recorded 29 of them in the regular season before leading the Denver Nuggets to their first championship in the playoffs.
