"Twat" is a vulgar and offensive term that can be used in two ways:
- As a slang term for a womans sexual organs, specifically the vulva or vagina.
- As a derogatory epithet used to refer to an obnoxious or stupid person, often used as an insult.
The words etymology is uncertain, but it has been in use since at least 1656. In British English, it is a common insult. The American Heritage Dictionary suggests a conjectural Old English word "thwāt", meaning "a cut", cognate with the Old Norse "þveit" ("thveit"). Jonathon Green suggests a connection with "twitchel", a dialect term for a narrow passage. The twentieth-century British slang verb twat, meaning to hit, whack, is probably an unrelated homonym of onomatopoeic origin.
It is important to note that "twat" is a highly offensive and vulgar term that should be avoided in polite conversation.
