A vCard, also known as Virtual Contact File, is a file format standard for electronic business cards. It is used for communication exchange on business or personal cards and can be attached to e-mail messages, sent via Multimedia Messaging Service (MMS), on the World Wide Web, instant messaging, NFC or through QR code. vCards can contain name and address information, phone numbers, e-mail addresses, URLs, logos, photographs, and audio clips. They are used as a data interchange format in smartphone contacts, personal digital assistants (PDAs), personal information managers (PIMs), and customer relationship management systems (CRMs) .
The vCard format is described in detail in Request for Comments 6350 and was developed by the Internet Engineering Task Force. All vCards must start with the BEGIN:VCARD property and end with the END:VCARD property. All vCards must contain the VERSION property, which specifies the vCard version.
vCards are important because they are a published industry specification, and software application developers can create programs that process vCards by letting recipients view them, or users can drag and drop them to an address book or some other application. They are easy and efficient to exchange in email messages or applications, and a user can click or import the card, and if they have a program that reads the vCard format, the data can be saved as a new contact record.
To attach a vCard to an email message, you can click on Attach Item > Business Card in Outlook and select the vCard you want to add to the message. To save a contact as a vCard, you can click on the File tab in the open contact and then click Save As.
