A VNG test, or videonystagmography, is a diagnostic procedure that assesses the health of your inner ear and evaluates your eye movements. The test is used to diagnose vestibular disorders, including acoustic neuroma, benign paroxysmal positional vertigo (BPPV), labyrinthitis, Ménière’s disease, and vestibular neuritis. During the test, you sit in a dark room wearing special goggles that record your eye movements. The test consists of several parts, including ocular testing, positional testing, and caloric testing. The test is non-invasive and only causes minor discomfort from wearing the goggles. The entire evaluation typically lasts about 90 minutes. The test is performed by several specialists, including audiologists, otolaryngologists, and neurologists. If you experience symptoms such as uncontrolled eye movements, dizziness, vertigo, difficulty focusing, or poor balance, you might want to consider scheduling a VNG test.
