A vertical sleeve gastrectomy (VSG) is a type of weight-loss surgery that is also known as sleeve gastrectomy or gastric sleeve surgery. During this procedure, a large portion of the stomach is removed, leaving behind a narrow tube called a sleeve, which can hold only three or four ounces of food. This surgery restricts food intake, which leads to weight loss, and can improve or eliminate obesity-related medical conditions such as type 2 diabetes, hypertension, and high cholesterol. The surgery is typically performed laparoscopically, which involves inserting small incisions in the upper abdomen, and it usually takes one to two hours. The patient is given general anesthesia before the surgery begins.
