A yakuza member is a member of a transnational organized crime syndicate originating in Japan, known for their strict codes of conduct, their organized fiefdom nature, and several unconventional ritual practices such as yubitsume or amputation of the left little finger. The yakuza are a 400-year-old criminal syndicate that carries out everything from human trafficking to real estate sales. They are often portrayed as males with heavily tattooed bodies and wearing fundoshi, sometimes with a kimono or, in more recent years, a Western-style "sharp" suit covering them. The yakuza groups are headed by an oyabun or kumichō (family head) who gives orders to his subordinates, the kobun. Members of yakuza gangs cut their family ties and transfer their loyalty to the gang boss. They refer to each other as family members—fathers and elder and younger brothers. The yakuza attract membership from traditionally scorned minority groups, such as the Korean-Japanese, and social outcasts who find a family in the world by joining the yakuza. The yakuza are involved in unlawful businesses such as gambling, drugs, prostitution, and loan-sharking. The organization of the Yakuza Society is divided into three general categories: tekiya (street peddlers), bakuto (gamblers), and gurentai (hoodlums).
