Activism refers to the practice of creating awareness, lobbying for change, or giving support for a cause, political movement, organization, or belief. It involves efforts to promote, impede, direct, or intervene in social, political, economic, or environmental reform with the desire to make changes in society toward a perceived greater good. Activism can be performed on a day-to-day basis in a wide variety of ways, including through the creation of art (artivism), computer hacking (hacktivism), or simply in how one chooses to spend their money (economic activism) . Activists challenge the status quo by using their voice to bring about social, political, economic, or environmental reform. There is no single way to conduct activism - any collective action that draws attention to an issue constitutes activism. Activism is not an activity always performed by those who profess activism as a profession. The term "activist" may apply broadly to anyone who engages in activism, or narrowly limited to those who choose political or social activism as a vocation or characteristic practice. Effective activists possess persistence, creativity, commitment, and often courage, but above all, a belief in human beings and in human rights. Some examples of activism include demonstrations, protests, lobbying, voting, or petitioning.
