Adaptation is the ability of living organisms to adjust themselves to their surroundings. It refers to the changes in structure or behavior of an organism that will allow it to survive in a particular habitat. Adaptation can be physical or behavioral attributes of an animal that help them survive better in their ecosystem. For example, animals may develop thicker fur to survive in colder climates, or they may change their behavior to avoid predators. Plants and animals adapt themselves to survive in a particular environment. Adaptation does not take place in a short time, and it takes thousands of years for living beings to adapt to their habitat. Those animals which cannot adapt to these changes die out, and only the adapted ones survive. Adaptation is different from evolution, as evolution brings about drastic changes that occur in the genetic level, whereas adaptation is a short-term process where the changes that occur are usually reversible. However, adaptation does lead to evolution.
