Adhan is the Islamic call to public prayer (salah) in a mosque recited by a muezzin at prescribed times of the day. The word "adhan" means "announcement" in Arabic, and it is variously transliterated in different cultures. The adhan is delivered five times a day to remind Muslims to come to mandatory prayer and leave worldly matters behind. The person who performs the adhan is called the muadhan, and it is traditionally done from the minaret of mosques. The adhan begins with an affirmation of the supremacy of Allah (God), followed by the shahadah (profession of faith), which consists of the profession of the Unity of Allah (God), the negation of shirk (polytheism), and the confirmation that Muhammad is the Messenger of Allah (God). After that, comes the call to the Prayer and to success, which also implies our return to the Creator. The words of the adhan are recited in Arabic and are repeated for emphasis. The adhan is recited in a loud voice by the muezzin facing the direction of the Kaba.
