Adolescence is the period of transition between childhood and adulthood. It is a time of rapid changes in the body and brain, often at different rates, and is a time for healthy exploration of identity and learning independence. The following are the stages of adolescence:

  1. Early Adolescence: Generally ages eleven to fourteen. During this stage, puberty is defined as the biological changes of adolescence. Most boys and girls enter adolescence still perceiving the world around them in concrete terms.

  2. Middle Adolescence: Ages fifteen to seventeen. By mid-adolescence, if not sooner, most youngsters’ physiological growth is complete; they are at or close to their adult height and weight, and are now physically capable of having babies. Most males will have started their growth spurt, and puberty-related changes continue.

  3. Late Adolescence: Ages eighteen to twenty-one. During this stage, intellectual, emotional, and social development begin to catch up with physical development.

Adolescence is a time for many changes in the body and brain, including physical, intellectual, psychological, and social challenges, as well as the development of their own moral compass. During adolescence, your child will begin to observe, measure, and manage their emotions. That means they’ll begin to become more aware of their own feelings and the feelings of others. The process of emotional development will give your child the opportunity to build their skills and discover their unique qualities.
