Agility is a skill-related component of physical fitness that relates to the ability to rapidly change the position of the entire body. It is defined as the ability to move and change the direction and position of the body quickly and effectively while under control. Agility has both movement and reactive elements, meaning it must involve a reaction to a stimulus, such as a goalkeeper reacting and saving a penalty kick in football. Agility is comprised of two subcomponents: change of direction (COD) speed and a perceptual and decision-making component, which are in turn determined by many other factors. Agility requires the use of cognitive components, as well as physical and technical qualities. Incorporating age-appropriate, fun, and engaging speed and agility activities into physical education classes can help keep students motivated to stay active while developing their coordination, balance, strength, acceleration, reaction time, and quickness.
