Air India Express is an Indian low-cost airline and a wholly owned subsidiary of Indian flag carrier airline Air India. It was launched on April 29, 2005, as a low-cost carrier with the objective of providing convenient connectivity to short-haul international routes in the Middle East and Southeast Asia for the Indian expatriate community. The airline operates direct point-to-point services connecting key cities in India with destinations in the Middle East and Southeast Asia. As of April 2023, it operates around 649 flights per week to 33 destinations including the Middle East and Southeast Asia. The airline carries around 4.3 million passengers every year connecting 140 city pairs. It has secondary hubs in Thiruvananthapuram, Kannur, Tiruchirappalli, Kozhikode, and Mangaluru.

Air India Express is currently in the process of a merger with AirAsia India, established by the Tata Group as a joint venture with AirAsia of Malaysia in 2013, but fully acquired by Tatas in 2022. The goal is for Air India Express to become a dominant carrier in India and serve international point-to-point markets from India. With underinvestment in the past, Air India Express has been given the firepower by Air India in multiple ways. For example, 190 Boeing 737 MAX aircraft out of the 470 aircraft ordered by Air India earlier this year are for the fleet of Air India Express. Air India will also vacate many markets across India, handing these routes over to Air India Express, where the group feels they are better served with a budget model over a full-service model.

The Air India Express fleet consists of 21 B737-800 aircraft, which are single-class economy and have a passenger carrying capacity of around 180 seats. The airline provides complimentary refreshments and mineral water to all their passengers, and snacks, reading material, and other entertainment options may be purchased on-board. The courteous staff is ever willing to help out passengers and ensure that they have a comfortable journey.
