In basketball, an air ball is a shot attempt that completely misses the basket, rim, and backboard. It is an embarrassing occurrence that sometimes leads crowds to chant "Airball!". An air ball is not considered a blocked shot, and it does not reset the shot clock. Air balls occur in almost every game of basketball, and they can come from any type of shot, including layups, free throws, and dunks. They usually happen when a player does not get enough power behind the shot for it to travel the distance it needs to go or misjudges the distance the ball needs to travel to get to the basket. In collegiate basketball, home crowds were found to initially chant when the air ball shot was made from a distance and when it resulted in a lost possession.
