AKT is a collective name for a set of three serine/threonine-specific protein kinases that play key roles in multiple cellular processes such as glucose metabolism, apoptosis, cell proliferation, transcription, and cell migration. The three highly homologous isoforms of AKT are Akt1 (PKBα), Akt2 (PKBβ), and Akt3 (PKBγ) . Akt1 is involved in cellular survival pathways, by inhibiting apoptotic processes. Akt1 is also able to induce protein synthesis pathways, and is therefore a key signaling protein in the cellular pathways that lead to skeletal muscle hypertrophy and general tissue growth. Akt proteins are associated with tumor cell survival, proliferation, and invasiveness. The activation of Akt is also one of the most frequent alterations observed in human cancer and tumor cells.
It is worth noting that AKT can also refer to a dance-inspired fitness program that combines dance-based cardio, strength, tone, and circuit training in an inclusive and vibrant atmosphere.
