Al-Aqsa is a mosque located in the Old City of Jerusalem. It is considered the third holiest site in Islam, after Mecca and Medina. The mosque is part of a larger compound of Islamic religious buildings that sit atop the Temple Mount, also known as the Haram al-Sharif. The compound is home to two Muslim holy places: the Dome of the Rock and the Al-Aqsa Mosque, also known as the Qibli Mosque. Al-Aqsa was built in the 8th century AD and was the first qibla in Islam. It has been a significant and important place of worship for the Prophets of Islam. The mosque is regarded as a flashpoint for deadly violence over matters of sovereignty and religion in Jerusalem.
