Al-Aqsa is a compound of Islamic religious buildings that sit atop the Temple Mount, also known as the Haram al-Sharif, in the Old City of Jerusalem. It is the third holiest site in Islam, after Mecca and Medina, and is home to two Muslim holy places: the Dome of the Rock and the Al-Aqsa Mosque, also known as the Qibli Mosque. The entire compound is known as the Blessed Masjid Al-Aqsa and is referred to as Al-Haram ash-Sharif (the Noble Sanctuary). Al-Aqsa was the first qibla in Islam and has been a significant and important place of worship for the Prophets of Islam. The compound is also important to the three Abrahamic religions. Al-Aqsa has been a flashpoint for deadly violence over matters of sovereignty and religion in Jerusalem. The compound has long been a point of contention in the Israeli-Palestinian conflict, with most clashes occurring because of Israeli settlers trying to pray within the compound, which directly violates the status quo.
