Albinism is a rare genetic disorder that affects the production of melanin, the pigment that colors skin, hair, and eyes. It is not a disease, but a genetic condition that people are born with. Albinism can affect people of all races and ethnic groups, and it is caused by mutations in specific genes that are responsible for melanin. Different types of albinism are caused by various gene mutations, and they can produce symptoms similar to OCA (Oculocutaneous albinism), such as Hermansky-Pudlak syndrome and Chediak-Higashi syndrome. Symptoms of albinism are usually seen in a persons skin, hair, and eye color, but sometimes differences are slight. People with albinism often have white or very light blonde hair, although some have brown or ginger hair. They also have very pale skin that burns easily in the sun and does not usually tan. Eye problems are common in people with albinism, including poor eyesight, astigmatism, and nystagmus.
