Aloe latex is a yellowish-brown fluid found just under the skin of the aloe plant. It contains chemicals that work as a laxative and is taken orally to treat constipation. Some aloe products are made from the whole crushed leaf, so they contain both gel and latex. However, aloe latex is banned for use as a laxative by the FDA due to safety concerns. High concentrations of aloin, a component of aloe latex, may lead to dehydration, diarrhea, stomach cramps, or kidney failure. Therefore, people should avoid consuming aloin. Commercial manufacturers use a filtering process known as decolorization to remove the toxic compound. This method involves purifying them using carbon filtration, and the byproduct is aloe vera juice which is essentially free of aloin.
