Amarula Cream Liqueur is a type of cream liqueur that is made in South Africa. It is made from sugar, cream, and the fruit of the African marula tree, which is also known as the elephant tree or the marriage tree. The liqueur has an alcohol content of 17% by volume (34 proof) and has a slightly fruity caramel taste. Amarula Cream Liqueur is made by distilling and aging the Marula spirit in French oak for two years. The liqueur has won several awards, including a gold medal at the 2009 San Francisco World Spirits Competition.
Amarula Cream Liqueur is best served chilled, on the rocks, or with crushed ice. It can also be used in desserts and cocktails. The liqueur has a creamy milk-like texture and a plush and mouth-filling palate without being too heavy. Amarula Cream Liqueur is the only liqueur on the market made from Africas marula fruit. The fruit has a thick skin and juicy flesh that appears similar to a lychee, while slightly more yellow in color. It has a zesty citrus taste with tropical notes of melon and guava and an undertone of earthiness that is unmistakable.
Amarula Cream Liqueur was first marketed by Southern Liqueur Company of South Africa in September 1989. Today, it is the most widely distributed alcoholic beverage in all of Africa. The liqueurs success in Africa and beyond led its creators to found the Amarula Trust in 2002, intended to help safeguard endangered African elephants. The Amarula Trust raises money and awareness for Africas dwindling elephant population, now as low as 400,000 from upwards of 5 million just a decade ago, the victims of poaching and habitat loss.
