Ambient lighting is a type of lighting that provides overall illumination for a space, creating a uniform light level throughout the area. It is also known as general lighting and is usually the primary source of light in a room. Ambient lighting can be achieved through a variety of lighting fixtures, including ceiling-mounted or recessed fixtures, wall sconces, floor lamps, and cove, soffit, and valance lighting. Natural light sources, such as sunlight and moonlight, can also contribute to ambient lighting. The purpose of ambient lighting is to light up the room and create a warm and inviting atmosphere. It is often used as the base layer of lighting and can be complemented with task and accent lighting to provide a well-rounded, visually appealing atmosphere. When planning the layers of light in a room, it usually makes sense to consider the ambient lighting first, then consider task and accent lighting. The color temperature of ambient lighting should be around 2700–3000 K to create a warm and inviting atmosphere.
