An anti-müllerian hormone (AMH) test is a blood test that measures the amount of AMH in a blood sample. AMH is produced by the testicles in males and by the follicles in the ovaries in females. The test is mainly used with other tests to make decisions about treating female infertility and to check how many eggs a woman has left in her ovaries, which is called the "ovarian reserve". The test can tell the size of the ovarian reserve, but it cannot predict whether a woman will be able to get pregnant or the health of her eggs. Testing AMH levels helps healthcare providers know what dose of fertility medicine a woman may need to get the best response. In females, AMH testing may also be used to determine if an ovarian mass is a granulosa cell tumor, to check if treatment is working, or if the tumor has returned. The AMH test is relatively new and is not frequently covered by health insurance.
