AMRAP stands for "as many repetitions (or rounds) as possible" and is a type of high-intensity circuit training. In an AMRAP workout, you perform as many repetitions of an exercise as possible within a set amount of time, typically ranging from 5 to 30 minutes. The goal is to work against the clock, pushing yourself to increase your intensity and complete as many rounds or repetitions as possible.
AMRAP workouts are similar to high-intensity interval training (HIIT) but do not have set rest breaks. Instead, you work the entire time and only rest when you need to reset your form or if you get too winded. AMRAP workouts can be adapted to any fitness level and goal, and can be done using just your body weight or any equipment you have available.
Some benefits of AMRAP workouts include:
- Building strength, power, endurance, and conditioning
- Improving cardiovascular and mental health
- Burning calories and hitting various muscle groups in a short time
- Boosting endorphins and reducing stress
AMRAP workouts are designed to build fitness and endurance, rather than to develop pure muscular strength, which is best done by lifting heavy weights with longer periods of rest. Since they involve plenty of repetitions, AMRAPs should not include any exercises that require perfect form, as fatigue can lead to poor form and increase the risk of injury.
