An Automated Manual Transmission (AMT) is a type of transmission for motor vehicles that is essentially a conventional manual transmission equipped with automatic actuation to operate the clutch and/or shift gears. AMTs are not automatic transmissions, but rather a two-pedal operation that uses only an accelerator and a brake pedal, along with a shift stalk to select drive, neutral, or reverse. They function internally the same as manuals, but with the sensors and actuators performing the clutch work and shift gears. AMTs combine a traditional clutch-actuated manual gearbox with a computer-controlled shift actuator and clutch, which means they are always ‘on the job’ and operating with precision. AMTs have many benefits compared to true manuals in terms of safety, driver fatigue, maintenance, and fuel economy. They are more fuel-efficient than regular automatics and allow more of the engine’s power to be transferred to the wheels. AMTs are popular for smaller cars in Europe and some developing markets, particularly India where it is notably favored over conventional automatic and CVT transmissions. They are also used in semi-trucks, where they detect what gear they should be in and automatically shift gears, saving time by eliminating the need to manually change gears.
