An anarchist is a person who rebels against any authority, established order, or ruling power. Anarchism is a political philosophy and movement that is skeptical of all justifications for authority and seeks to abolish the institutions it claims are oppressive. Anarchists believe that the state is a tool of domination and consider it to be illegitimate regardless of its political tendencies. Instead of people being able to control the aspects of their life, major decisions are taken by a small elite. Authority ultimately rests solely on power, regardless of whether that power is open or transparent, as it still has the ability to coerce people. Anarchism is a process whereby authority and domination is being replaced with non-hierarchical, horizontal structures, with voluntary associations between human beings. Anarchists have a socialist critique of capitalism, while also emphasizing the freedom of the individual. Anarchist violence appears as the violence of an individual against the state, and anarchists disagree over the means to be used to attain their ends, ranging from extreme violence to non-resistance.
