An Arab is a person who speaks Arabic as their first language and is united by culture and history, not by race. Arabs are not a distinct ethnic group, as there are both white and black Arabs. Most Arabs are Muslims, but there are also millions of Christian Arabs and thousands of Jewish Arabs. The Arab world consists of 22 countries in the Middle East and North Africa, including Algeria, Egypt, Iraq, Jordan, Kuwait, Lebanon, Libya, Morocco, Oman, Palestine, Qatar, Saudi Arabia, Sudan, Syria, Tunisia, the United Arab Emirates, and Yemen. Iran and Turkey are not Arab countries, and their primary languages are Farsi and Turkish, respectively. Arab countries have a rich diversity of ethnic, linguistic, and religious communities, including Kurds, Armenians, Berbers, and others. The term "Arab" is much more akin to the label of "Latino/a" or "Hispanic," and it is often used by Arab people to say that they share a common heritage that is tied, one way or another, to the Arabic language.
