An archdeacon is a high-ranking member of the clergy who works as an assistant to a bishop, especially in the Anglican Church. In the Church of England, an archdeacon is a senior clergy position who serves under the bishop of a diocese, usually with responsibility for a specific area. The archdeacon exercises an ordinary jurisdiction, which may either be performed in person or through an official or commissary. The archdeacon is responsible for ensuring that all ecclesiastical duties are diligently performed and bringing to the bishop’s attention what calls for correction or merits praise. The archdeacon also represents the diocesan bishop in the resource management, financial, and organizational structures of the diocese. The archdeacon has statutory powers to grant faculties without reference to the Chancellor in certain types of cases listed in Part 7 and Schedule 2 of the Faculty Jurisdiction Rules 2013. The archdeacon may initiate or intervene in faculty proceedings and may be asked by the Chancellor to seek local resolution of a particular case. The archdeacon is normally present at any Consistory Court hearing in his or her archdeaconry. The archdeacon has no statutory role in proceedings under the Clergy Discipline Measure 2003, but the Code of Practice describes circumstances in which it may be appropriate for the archdeacon to act as the complainant or to provide pastoral support.
