In the Harry Potter universe, an Auror is a highly trained witch or wizard who works for the Ministry of Magic as a law enforcement official. They are responsible for fighting against and capturing the forces of the Dark Arts, and their focus is on dark magic. Aurors are highly skilled in Defense Against the Dark Arts and are trained to apprehend and detain dangerous dark witches and wizards. They are like a police force and sometimes work as intelligence agents. Aurors have the authority to arrest malefactors like Death Eaters and have been given authority to use deadly force against Death Eaters in particular.
The requirements for becoming an Auror are quite stringent, and candidates must meet high academic standards and undergo rigorous training. It takes three years to become an Auror after attending Hogwarts, and a candidate should have a minimum of five N.E.W.T.s with no less than an Exceeds Expectations grade in Defense Against the Dark Arts.
Some of the most powerful Aurors in the Harry Potter series include Nymphadora Tonks, Alastor Mad-Eye Moody, Kingsley Shacklebolt, Neville Longbottom, and Harry Potter himself.
