An autocratic leader is a type of leader who has complete authoritarian control over a team or organization and makes all the decisions with little to no input from others. They assert absolute authority and control over subordinates and demand unquestionable obedience from them. Autocratic leaders are sometimes referred to as authoritarian leaders. They are stereotyped as bossy, brutal, and lacking empathy, and their absolute power can be intimidating and strike fear. However, this leadership style can work well in situations that require error-free performance, immediate/urgent decision-making, and task completion within a deadline. Some examples of where autocratic leadership works best are emergency cases, time-sensitive tasks, and when working with inexperienced teams. Autocratic leadership is characterized by the following factors:

  • Clearly defined roles and responsibilities
  • Centralized control
  • Use of punishment, threat, demands, orders, rules, and regulations to gain control

It is important to note that autocratic leaders are not in the business of using their power for oppression, and this leadership style is more focused on power for pushing the group forward. However, this style can drive discontent, high attrition, and fear among employees when used outside of an applicable context.
