An automat is a type of fast food restaurant where simple foods and drinks are served through vending machines, and there is typically no waitstaff. The worlds first automat, Quisisana, opened in Berlin, Germany in 1895. The walls of the automat were lined with individual, glass-fronted compartments containing a plate of food. Customers would drop the necessary coin in a slot, and the food would be displayed in long glass compartments. Automats served up home-style comfort food including both hot and cold entrees, desserts, and beverages. Many offered an entire wall of pies, including savory pot pies and sweet fruit pies, or mac and cheese, mashed potatoes, salads, and sandwiches. Despite its European roots, the automat soon became an integral part of the American dining landscape. At its height, the automat was featured in popular movies and songs and became a must-see New York City icon for tourists. Today, none of these restaurants exist in the United States. However, the concept of the automat has been revived in recent years, with new restaurants putting a modern spin on the classic no-contact format.
