Ebenezer is a Hebrew word that means "stone of help". It is mentioned in the Bible in the Books of Samuel as the scene of battles between the Israelites and Philistines. In 1 Samuel 7, Samuel sets up a stone between Mizpah and Shen and calls it Ebenezer, saying, "Thus far the Lord has helped us". The stone was meant to commemorate Gods intervention on behalf of his people and to serve as a reminder of the Lords power and protection. The hymn "Come Thou Fount of Every Blessing" refers to this monument. In modern usage, the term "Ebenezer" can refer to a tangible reminder of Gods help in ones life, or to a person who is miserly and lacking in charity, as in the character Ebenezer Scrooge from Charles Dickenss A Christmas Carol.
