An economy is a system of interrelated production, consumption, and exchange activities that ultimately determines how resources are allocated among all the participants. It encompasses all the activities related to the production, consumption, and trade of goods and services in an entity, whether the entity is a nation or a small town. No two economies are identical, and each is formed according to its own resources, culture, laws, history, and geography.

There are different types of economies, including command, traditional, market, and mixed. Each varies in their ideals and systems of controls. In a market economy, goods and services are produced and exchanged according to demand and supply between participants by barter or a medium of exchange with a credit or debit value accepted within the network, such as a unit of currency. In a planned economy, political agents directly control what is produced and how it is sold and distributed. A green economy is low-carbon and resource-efficient, where growth in income and employment is driven by public and private investments that reduce carbon emissions and pollution, enhance energy and resource efficiency, and prevent the loss of biodiversity and ecosystem services. A gig economy is one in which short-term jobs are assigned or chosen on-demand.

An economy exists in a geographical area, such as a local area, country, or the world. The Australian economy, for example, is market-based, where decisions to produce or consume goods and services reflect demand and supply in the market. Economic questions could include what resources a country has, how many goods and services are being produced, to what extent people are borrowing or saving money, and how a rise in prices might affect peoples decisions around spending.

In summary, an economy is a complex system that involves the production, consumption, and trade of goods and services, and it determines how resources are allocated among all the participants. It can be a market, planned, green, or gig economy, and it exists in a geographical area.
