An editorial is an article written by the senior editorial people or publisher of a newspaper, magazine, or any other written document, often unsigned. It is an opinionated news story that presents the newspapers opinion on an issue and reflects the majority vote of the editorial board, the governing body of the newspaper made up of editors and business managers. The goal of a good editorial is to influence public opinion, promote critical thinking, and sometimes cause people to take action on an issue. Editorials typically have an introduction, body, and conclusion like other news stories, an objective explanation of the issue, especially complex issues, a timely news angle, opinions from the opposing viewpoint that refute directly the same issues the writer addresses, and the opinions of the writer delivered in a professional manner. Good editorials engage issues, not personalities, and refrain from name-calling or other petty tactics of persuasion. A good editorial is either an opinion maker, reconciliatory between contrary viewpoints or standpoints, or a combination of both.
