An escape hood is a type of personal protective equipment (PPE) designed to provide short-term respiratory protection in emergency situations where chemicals, smoke, or other harmful particles are present. Escape hoods are designed to filter out these particles, protecting the wearers eyes, skin, and respiratory system. They are typically used in emergency situations such as chemical spills, low concentration of chemical or biological agents, and fire-related incidents. Escape hoods can provide a minimum of 15 minutes of autonomy to escape from a dangerous area. They are also effective at keeping radioactive particulates out of the lungs. Escape hoods can be used by untrained civilians to quickly and safely get away from an area that may have a chemical, biological, or even radiological or nuclear threat present. Escape hoods are available in different configurations, such as fire escape hoods and classic emergency escape respirator hoods, depending on the type of hazard they are designed to protect against.
