A eulogy is a speech or writing in praise of a person, especially one who recently died or retired, or as a term of endearment. It is typically given as part of funeral services, either in a funeral home during or after a wake in the US, or during the service in the UK, typically at a crematorium or place of worship, before the wake. Eulogies can also praise people who are still alive. They are usually delivered by a family member or a close family friend in the case of a dead person, and on occasions, eulogies are given to those who are severely ill or elderly in order to express words of love and gratitude before they die. The main purpose of a eulogy is to pay tribute to someone who passed away, but it also aids in the collective processing and grieving for those who just lost a loved one.
