An honorable discharge is the highest ranking a service member can receive upon leaving the military. It indicates that the service member has faithfully and patriotically performed their duties and conducted themselves in a manner of benefit to their branch. To receive an honorable discharge, a service member must have received a rating from good to excellent for their service. Service members who meet or exceed the required standards of duty performance and personal conduct, and who complete their tours of duty, normally receive honorable discharges. However, one does not need to complete a full term of service to receive an honorable discharge, as long as the reason for their discharge is not due to misconduct. An honorable discharge entitles the veteran to all the benefits available to veterans who have met the other benefit qualifications.
