An inclusive classroom is a general education classroom where students with and without learning differences learn together. It is built on the notion that being in a non-segregated classroom is beneficial for all students, irrespective of their abilities or skills. Inclusive classrooms are welcoming and support the diverse academic, social, emotional, and communication needs of all students. The goal is for the teacher to teach each student with similar effort, so that the nature of disability does not become disruptive to the operation of the class.
An inclusive classroom climate refers to an environment where all students feel supported intellectually and academically, and are extended a sense of belonging in the classroom regardless of identity. To maintain an inclusive classroom climate, the instructor can model inclusive language, get to know students, encourage interaction among students, and provide academic support.
Inclusive classrooms empower children to grow and thrive as confident individuals, not just as students during their time in educational systems, but in life beyond school as citizens in their communities and in the world. Inclusive classrooms are beneficial for all students, not just those with special educational needs.
