An infanta is a title and rank given in the Iberian kingdoms of Spain and Portugal to the daughters of the king, regardless of age. The title is derived from the same root as "infant," which in Romance languages may be more broadly interpreted to mean "child". Infantas are considered princesses of the blood royal and are granted certain privileges, such as the right to be buried in the Pantheon of Infantes in El Escorial. The consorts of infantas do not receive the title of infante, but they may receive the style of The Most Excellent and use the title of Duke consort of Soria as long as they are the consort or remain a widower. The title of infante may also be granted by royal decree in exceptional circumstances to people who prove to be worthy.
