An OBE is an award that stands for Officer of the Most Excellent Order of the British Empire. It is the second highest ranking Order of the British Empire award, behind the CBE but ahead of the MBE. The OBE is awarded to individuals who have made major contributions at a local level, or whose work has gained national recognition in their chosen area. It is given to someone for "outstanding achievement or service to the community. This will have had a long-term, significant impact and stand out as an example to others". The OBE is one of the British honours system awards, which rewards individuals with Honours, Decorations and Medals in public recognition of their merit, service or bravery. The British honours system awards are announced and awarded twice a year by His Majesty The King, with lists consisting of knights and dames, appointments to the Order of the British Empire, and gallantry and bravery awards.
