An open proxy is a type of proxy server that is accessible by any internet user. Generally, a proxy server only allows users within a network group to store and forward internet services such as DNS or web pages to reduce and control the bandwidth used by the group. With an open proxy, however, any user on the internet is able to use this forwarding service. Open proxies are often used to run virtual private networks (VPNs), which hide users IP addresses from public web servers. This makes it harder for cybercriminals to discover users’ identities or intercept their data while browsing the web and other internet services. However, open proxies present multiple risks as they allow public access and are configured to treat all traffic equally. This means they allow the transmission of both legitimate and malicious traffic, and cybercriminals use proxy servers to search for potential targets, carry out botnet attacks, and flood. Therefore, it is important to configure servers to avoid open proxies.
