An outcome variable is a dependent variable that is observed and measured by changing independent variables. It is the attribute that is expected to be predicted or affected by other attributes. In a mathematical model, it is normally placed on the left-hand side of the equation, while the variables that might have an effect on the outcome are placed on the right-hand side of the model equation. Outcome variables are also referred to as response variables, criterion, predicted variable, measured variable, explained variable, experimental variable, responding variable, output variable, target, or label. They are usually the result of experiments that determine what was caused or what changed as a result of the study. In statistical analysis, outcome variables are the variables that are analyzed, and conclusions are drawn from the statistical analysis.
