An overbite is a type of malocclusion, which is a deviation or misalignment from a normal occlusion. It occurs when the upper front teeth protrude over the lower front teeth by a proportion of between 30-50% . A little bit of an overbite is completely normal, as it prevents the upper and lower front teeth from hitting each other whenever you bite down, leading to premature wear of the enamel. However, when the degree of overlap is too large, it’s considered an excessive overbite, also referred to as a deep bite. An excessive overbite can be dental, caused by the position of the teeth, or skeletal, due to the shape or size of the jaw. The most common cause of an overbite is the shape and/or size of the jaw or the teeth. Other causes include excessive nail-biting, teeth grinding, thumb-sucking, tongue-thrusting, using a pacifier, and losing teeth without timely repair. If left untreated, an overbite could cause significant health complications, including irreparable damage to teeth from abnormal positioning, possible jaw pain including temporomandibular joint disorders (TMJ), and speech problems.
