An R-rated movie is a film that has been given a "restricted" rating by one of the film rating systems, such as the Motion Picture Association of America (MPAA) film rating system. The MPAA defines an R-rated movie as one that requires children under 17 to be accompanied by a parent or adult guardian. The film may include adult themes, adult activity, hard language, intense or persistent violence, sexually oriented nudity, drug abuse, or other elements that parents are counseled to take seriously. The rating descriptors, which are unique to each film, give more details about why the film received a certain rating. For example, some R-rated films may contain "pervasive language, drug use, disturbing material, some violent content, and graphic nudity". It is important to note that R-rated films are not designed to indicate that films are appropriate or inappropriate, but rather to give parents clear, concise information about a films content, in order to help them determine whether a movie is suitable for their children.
