An RSV vaccine is a vaccine that can prevent lower respiratory tract disease caused by respiratory syncytial virus (RSV) . RSV is a common respiratory virus that usually causes mild, cold-like symptoms, but it can be serious and even life-threatening for infants, older adults, and people with weakened immune systems or underlying health conditions. The first RSV vaccine approved for use in the United States is called Arexvy, and it is approved for the prevention of lower respiratory tract disease caused by RSV in individuals 60 years of age and older. Another RSV vaccine called Abrysvo was approved by the FDA in August for those who are between 32 and 36 weeks pregnant. The vaccines are non-live vaccines that contain a part of the RSV virus (called a protein) and cannot cause an infection in people with a weakened immune system. The RSV vaccine can cause side effects such as pain, redness, and swelling where the shot is given, fatigue, fever, headache, nausea, diarrhea, and muscle or joint pain. People with minor illnesses, such as a cold, may be vaccinated, but people who are moderately or severely ill should usually wait until they recover before getting the RSV vaccine.
