Ultra Wormholes are unstable portals that establish a connection from the Pokemon world to an area known as Ultra Space. They were first introduced in the Sun and Moon titles and are heavily associated with Cosmog, a legendary Pokemon that is able to open them along with its final evolutions Solgaleo and Lunala. Ultra Wormholes are important as theyre a way that incredibly powerful creatures called Ultra Beasts can enter into the world. In Pokemon Go, Ultra Wormholes are portals that appear at Gyms and allow Ultra Beasts to travel into our world. They replace the Raid Eggs that typically spawn the Raid Boss at Gyms when it is time for a raid to begin. When an Ultra Wormhole appears above a Gym, that means an Ultra Beast will emerge from it when the countdown ends. The Ultra Beast you can expect to appear will depend on the current event. Ultra Beasts are just as powerful as Legendaries and could really shake up the Go Battle League meta.
