Anant Chaturdashi is a festival celebrated by Hindus, which is dedicated to Lord Vishnu. It is observed on the fourteenth day of the moons waxing phase during the Hindu month of Bhadrapada. The festival is also associated with the day of immersion of Lord Ganeshas idol, marking the end of the ten-day-long Ganesh Chaturthi festival. Devotees visit the holy river to immerse the idols of Lord Ganapati following the large processions known as Ganpati visarjan.

On this day, devotees read ancient stories and tales of Lord Vishnu and observe a strict fast. They tie a thread of kumkum and turmeric-colored on their wrists, which consists of fourteen knots known as Ananta Sutras. The thread is a symbol of protection from negativity. Men tie the thread on their right wrist, and women tie it on their left wrist.

The festival has a legend behind it, which is found in the Mahabharata. It recounts the story of a woman named Sushila, who encountered a group of women worshipping Ananta near a riverbank. They explained that the performance of this vrata (pious observance) would earn great merit for the performer and offer them safety. The Ananta manifestation of Vishnu is venerated on this occasion to free adherents from sins.

In Jainism, the holy day of Anant Chaturdashi is very important, as it is the day when the twelfth Tirthankara of Jains named Lord Vasupujya attained Nirvana. The main purpose behind this vow is to earn purity of the divine and prosperity, and this vow is kept for a period of 14 years by the devotees.
