Animal testing for cosmetics is a type of animal testing used to test the safety and hypoallergenic properties of cosmetic products for use by humans. This type of testing is often harmful to the animal subjects, and it is opposed by many animal rights organizations. The animals used in cosmetic testing include rabbits, mice, rats, monkeys, dogs, guinea pigs, and other animals. Methods of testing cosmetics on animals include various tests that are categorized differently based on which areas the cosmetics will be used for. These tests include dripping cosmetics chemicals into animals eyes, shaving their fur and rubbing them into their exposed skin or forcing them down their throats. Once the tests are over, the animals will be killed and dissected.

Despite great progress over the past thirty years, animals continue to suffer in laboratories all over the world in tests required by governments for ingredients used in cosmetics. However, there are alternative testing methods for cosmetics, including in vitro human tissue testing, computer-derived prediction testing, and human volunteers. Many companies have also committed to using cruelty-free methods and have been certified by accreditation organizations.
