AOC is an acronym for Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez, who is an American politician and activist serving as the U.S. representative for New Yorks 14th congressional district since 2019. She was sworn in as the youngest woman and youngest Latina ever to serve in Congress in January 2019. AOC is a member of the Democratic Party and has been a lightning rod since her election in 2018. She has expressed support for policies that resemble those in the UK, Norway, Finland, and Sweden. AOC is open to using Modern Monetary Theory (MMT), a heterodox economic theory, as an economic pathway to fund and enable implementation of her policy goals. She has also proposed a public banking bill to encourage the creation of state and local public banks. AOCs platform includes key issues such as Medicare for All, housing as a human right, real public safety, honor in immigration, a just recovery for Puerto Rico, and elevate public education. She has cosponsored 29 bills to support community safety, including ending the school-to-prison pipeline, decriminalizing truancy, taking police out of schools, and ending broken-windows and quality-of-life policing. AOC has also called for priority support to small businesses and workers in the form of loans and direct payments.
