APBS stands for Aadhaar Payment Bridge System, which is a unique payment system implemented by the National Payments Corporation of India (NPCI) that uses Aadhaar numbers as a central key for electronically channelizing government subsidies and benefits to the Aadhaar-linked bank accounts of beneficiaries. The system is used by government departments and agencies for the transfer of benefits and subsidies under the Direct Benefit Transfer (DBT) scheme launched by the Government of India. APBS is based on Aadhaar numbers issued by the Unique Identification Authority of India (UIDAI) and the Institution Identification Number (IIN) issued by NPCI. The implementation of APBS has led to the electronification of a large number of retail payment transactions, which were predominantly either in cash or cheque. Some of the benefits of APBS include eliminating inordinate delays, multiple channels, and paperwork involved in the existing system, reducing leakages and delays in the disbursement of all government transactions, and bringing transparency and terminating pilferage from the distribution of funds sponsored by the Central Government of India.
