Aqua Tofana is a strong poison that was created in Sicily around 1630 and was widely used in Palermo, Naples, Perugia, and Rome, Italy. It was a colorless, tasteless liquid that contained mostly arsenic and lead, and possibly belladonna. The exact blend used to mix it is lost to us, but some ingredients are still known. It was easily mixed with water or wine to be served during meals, and poisoning by Aqua Tofana could go unnoticed, as the substance is clear and has no taste. It was slow-acting, with symptoms resembling progressive disease or other natural causes, and those poisoned by Aqua Tofana reported several symptoms, including cold-like symptoms, vomiting, and diarrhea. The poison was associated with Giulia Tofana, a woman from Palermo, who was purportedly the leader of a group of women who manufactured and distributed the poison. The first recorded mention of Aqua Tofana is from 1632–33, when it was used by two women, Francesca la Sarda and Teofania di Adamo, to poison their victims. Aqua Tofana was responsible for countless murders and became a symbol of female empowerment and vengeance.
